Forgiveness is personal
No matter what camp a person is in, Christian, atheist or otherwise, (s)he should understand that the power of forgiveness is
(1) For one's own relief from anger, sorrow, relentlessness, and so on;
(2) On secular or divine basis of humanity and fraternity (not exactly love), not only toward family and friends, but toward many more that may include his/her own enemies as well.
However, if I forgave murderers who had killed your loved ones, I'd be stepping into your private realm of entirety and wholesomeness. In layman's words, I shall have no power to intrude your private life (or to forgive in this manner).
