Tiananmen International Essay Contest This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre. The changes that have occurred in China over the past 23 years have brought both hope and crisis to Chinese politics and society. However, many fundamental issues of reform are inextricably linked with unsettled historical issues which make true reform hard to achieve. Among these historical issues, the Tiananmen Massacre is the most essential. To meaningfully move forward with fundamental economic and political reform, China needs a full and public reckoning of these tragic events in order to break through this political deadlock. The Chinese people, including the communist party leaders, know that the Tiananmen issue will be addressed sooner or later. But there is no clear path or consensus on how to achieve both political and social reconciliation on this subject. In fact, it is commonly recognized that solving the Tiananmen issue is a complicated political-legal process. Diverse views on the principles, timing and processes of such a reconciliation may result in different approaches that manifest different political, social and cultural outcomes. Finding an optimal solution and building a consensus around that solution is a crucial component for a peaceful political transition in China and will have a profound impact on the sustainable and stable development of Chinese society. In order to encourage people from all parts of society to think constructively and creatively for solutions on the issue, Chinaeweekly (Initiatives for China), Beijing Spring, and China In Perspective are jointly launching a Tiananmen essay contest. The topic for the essay is “How to Solve the Tiananmen Problem.” The contest will begin on April 15th and end on August 15th. Admitted essays will simultaneously be published on Chinaeweekly, Beijing Spring, and China In Perspective. In addition to the standard remuneration for publication, the first, second and third-place winners will be awarded a prize of $1000, $500, and $300 respectively. We look forward to receiving your submissions. Please send your essay (in Chinese and/or English) to: [email protected]作者: jzh0520 时间: 2012-5-12 21:30
