Interview with the Vampire
A
vampire novel by Anne Rice written in 1973 and published in 1976. The
novel, the first to feature the enigmatic vampire anti-hero Lestat, was
followed by several sequels, collectively known as The Vampire
Chronicles. Published in 1976, Interview with the Vampire quickly became
a cult success, and a major influence on present Goth culture. The
novel was set apart from its predecessors of the vampire genre by its
confessional tone from the vampire's perspective, touching on
existential despair and the sheer boredom of lifeless immortality.
Interview remains the best-selling and best-received of Rice's books.
The Vampire Lestat
The
second book of The Vampire Chronicles, following Interview with the
Vampire. Set in the late 18th Century to the late 1980s, the story
follows the 200 years long life of the vampire Lestat, and his rise from
humble beginnings as a penniless aristocrat to become the 'Brat Prince'
of the vampires.
The Queen of the Damned
The third novel of
The Vampire Chronicles. It follows Interview with the Vampire and The
Vampire Lestat. This novel is a continuation of the story that ends in a
cliffhanger in The Vampire Lestat and explores the rich history and
mythology of the origin of the vampires, which dates back to Ancient
Egypt.
The Tale of the Body Thief
The fourth novel of The
Vampire Chronicles, following The Queen of the Damned. Published in
1992, it continues the adventures of Lestat, specifically his efforts to
regain his lost humanity. It is a contemporary novel set entirely in
the late 20th century. This is a departure for Anne Rice, who often
takes readers into the past.
Memnoch the Devil
The fifth novel in
The Vampire Chronicles series, following The Tale of the Body Thief. In
this story, Lestat is approached by the Devil himself and offered a job.
After stalking and killing a ruthless but enthrallingly passionate
mobster named Roger, Lestat is approached by his ghost. At the same
time, he is becoming increasingly paranoid that he's being followed by
the Devil himself, and he is growing interested in Roger's daughter
Dora, a devout and popular television evangelist, who he wants to spare
from embarrassment. Lestat and his companions try to protect her
'church' from the fact that her father was a killer.
The Vampire Armand
Yhe
sixth novel in The Vampire Chronicles series. With Lestat still in
slumber after his adventures in Memnoch the Devil, the vampire coven is
united around the 'brat prince' (a nickname for Lestat given by the
older Children of the Millennia), and the vampire David Talbot takes the
opportunity to request that Armand tell David his life story. Armand,
who first appeared in Interview with the Vampire, agrees to tell his
tale.
Merrick
The seventh book in The Vampire Chronicles
series. This book brings together Rice's vampires and the Mayfair
Witches. We again meet Louis, Lestat, and David. They are followed by
the beautiful witch Merrick Mayfair, an offshoot of the Mayfair clan,
who knew David when he was a mortal man working as a member of the
Talamasca. Louis seeks Merrick's help in resurrecting the spirit of
Claudia.
Blood and Gold
The eighth book in The Vampire
Chronicles series. The book begins with an ancient vampire of Nordic
descent awaking after being frozen in a block of ice for hundreds of
years. The vampire, Thorne, meets Marius de Romanus and inquires about
Marius' past. Marius then provides his life story.
Blackwood Farm
The
ninth novel in The Vampire Chronicles series. The main character is
Tarquin 'Quinn' Blackwood, a child of the Blackwood clan, which is a
powerful and old family in New Orleans. Quinn is haunted by a mysterious
ghost named Goblin, who torments him mercilessly. He realizes that he
is unable to defeat this creature alone. Risking his life, Quinn embarks
upon a quest to enlist the aid of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt.
Lestat, after a fashion, agrees to help Quinn.
Blood Canticle
A
novel by Anne Rice in which she combines the new characters from her
novel Blackwood Farm with those from her previous novels in The Vampire
Chronicles and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy. The style of
this book deviated immensely from Rice's other works, while the
storyline also created a very strong (and much-publicised) split in fan
opinion.
