Many of us pay little attention to the Bible Translation we use. Yet everyone wants the most accurate and readable translation. Let me start with RSV as many old versions were completed before the Dead Sea Scrolls were generally available to scholars.
Here are some principles of different versions
RSV - ESV - NRSV
ESV is considered to be literal as gender-inclusive language was kept. Translators tried to reproduce the form of the Greek or Hebrew without thinking how people actually work on their own language.
Then, in the new version(NRSV), archaism is totally eliminated, as no linguistic distinction is found in its original text between addressing a human being and addressing the Deity
In addition, NRSV has an anglicized version, where the text is slightly modified to be consistent with British grammar and spelling.
Good News Bible (GNB)
One really good version for children. We can even find an online version of pictures and drawings.
However, poetry is sometimes sacrificed for clarity.
Characteristics : Simple, Inaccurate
NIV - NIrV
A balance between word-for-word and thought-for-thought. One of the most popular versions up till now.
NIrV : its junior version.
NASB
This one is strictly translated from its original text. Translators revised the old version as literally as possible. Not easy for beginners.

Conclusion :
A good version of Bible for children may not be the same good one for adults.
There's no such a thing as we call the BEST version of Bible. It is basically up to your language level and your purpose.
